After working thereafter in industry, in London, as a research and development Engineer, he joined University of Lagos in September 1970, where he rose to the position of Professor of Engineering Analysis and later, Head of Engineering Analysis Unit. He was subsequently appointed, in 1988 as the Director-General of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology of Nigeria, a position he held till September 1997 when he was re-designated Permanent Secretary of the Ministry. In February 1998, he moved over to the Federal Ministry of Industry as Permanent Secretary, his current position.
As a former Chairman of the Commonwealth Science Council, Professor Okon who is a Foundation Fellow and member of Council of the Nigeria Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science and a Registered Engineer of Nigeria, has to his credit numerous publications in Engineering Analysis, Mathematics, Technology, Science and Technology Development. He was also recently decorated as Commander of the Niger.
