Engr. Prof. Steven Odi-Owei was born in Accra, Ghana on 21st June, 1945. He obtained his West African School Certificate at Bishop Dimieari Grammar School, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State in 1964. He had his B. Sc. Mechanical Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, (1967-1970). He thereafter proceeded to Cranfield Institute (Now Cranfield University) where he obtained his M.SC degree in Automative Studies in 1973 and later obtained his Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering (Tribology) from University Wales Swansea in 1990.
Prof. Odi-Owei began his engineering career as a pupil engineer in the Ministry of Works and Transport, Port Harcourt (Rivers State) in 1970. In 1971, he joined the then College of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt (now Rivers State University of Science &Technology (RUST). He became Professor of Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Tribology in 1990. Before then, he had held several strategic positions at various times in the University: Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Chairman, Committee of Deans. He has been a visiting Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wales, Swansea, UK. He was appointed the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University and in October 1996 was appointed the Vice-Chancellor of the University.
Prof. Odi-Owei has contributed
immensely to the Engineering profession. He has also founded the Tribology
Society of Nigeria, of which he is the President (1991-date). He is also the
Vice-President, International Tribology Council (1995-date) and has served as
Consultant to various organizations. Prof. Odi-Owei is a Fellow of the Nigerian
Society of Engineers, Fellows, Institute of Diagnostic Engineers, UK. He is
widely published in his subject area of lubrication, friction and wear.
