Engr. Joseph Oyeyani Makoju was born on 13th July, 1948 at Okene, Kogi State of Nigeria. He attended Government College, Kaduna between 1962-1966 and later to Federal Government College, Warri to pursue Higher School Certificate between 1969 and 1972. He proceeded to the University of Nottingham where he obtained a B. Sc degree in Mechanical Engineering at Shell BP’s oil fields in Port Harcourt. Two years later, he returned to Nottingham University on a Commonwealth Post Graduate Scholarship where he obtained a Master of Philosophy degree in Mechanical Engineering.
 
On completion, he got appointed with West African Portland Cement Company (WAPCO) and was seconded to its overseas Technical Partners-Blue Circle Industries Ltd as a Shift Manager and Section Engineer. In 1976, he was deployed to WAPCOs Ewekoro Cement works as Deputy General Manager, Works, and two years later, became General Manager and was subsequently sent on a Senior Executive Course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos in 1989. On Completion of the course, he was appointed to the board of WAPCO as Assistant Managing Director on 1st January, 1990 and rose to the position of MD/CEO in 1991. In the 1990s, he not only successfully re-engineered and repositioned WAPCO but propelled it into the class of Mega companies in the country by making it one of the first companies to break the multi-million naira turnover barrier. It was from WAPCO that Engr. Makoju was appointed on secondment in September, 2000 to his present position as MD/CEO of NEPA (now Power Holding Nig. Plc).
 
Engr. Makoju has attended various management courses in Nigeria and abroad and has served the country in various capacities including Member, Vision 2010 Committee. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Member, Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) and founding member of Ikeja Business Club. He was honoured with the prestigious National Award of Officer of the Order of the Niger in October 2000.
