Engr. Prof Abdu Salihi was born in Kibiya Town of Kibiya Local Government Area, Kano State on 25th October 1954. He started his Western Education at Kibiya Primary School in January 1961, proceeded to Birnin Kudu Government Secondary School in January 1968 and School of Basic Studies, ABU Zaria in January 1973. His Engineering Career started when he joined the Mechanical Engineering Department, ABU Zaria in October 1974, where he graduated with a B.Eng. degree with Second Class Honours (Upper Division). After the One year National Youth Service at the 5 Infantry Brigade Workshop in Owerri, Imo State, he got employed as a Graduate Assistant by the newly established Mechanical Engineering Department, Bayero University Kano, as the first Nigerian Academic Staff of the Faculty of Engineering in July 1989. Prof Salihi was immediately given a Study Fellowship by the Bayero University and in September 1989 left for Postgraduate studies at the Loughborough University of Technology, England, where he got an M.Sc. degree in Design of Production Systems in 1980 and a PhD degree in Microcomputer Control Applications in March 1983. Prof Salihi was among the pioneer Researchers in the use of Microcomputers for control of Pneumatic Robots, use of Local Area Microcomputer Networks in control of Glass Container Manufacture Machines and collection of data for control and Management Applications.

Upon return to Bayero University Kano in 1983, Prof Salihi was promoted to Lecturer II and rose steadily to become a Professor of Mechanical Engineering in February 1995. He was a Head of Mechanical Engineering Department, Chairman/Member of many University Committees, Member of the University Senate and Member of the University Council. He was a one-time Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, where he setup and equipped the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Laboratories, recruited Academic and Non-Academic Staff, and secured NUC and COREN Accreditation for the programmes. He was a Visiting Professor at the University of Khartoum, Sudan, was on Sabbatical at the Kano University of Science and Technology. He supervised many Undergraduate, Masters and PhD Students.


Prof Salihi was a Member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (1984) and Fellow (1994). He is registered with COREN (1985). He was the Secretary and later Chairman of NSE Kano Branch, a Member of NSE Council for many years, Member of the NSE Board of Fellows, Vice Chairman Technical of the College of Fellows, and a one-time Member of COREN Council. He participated in several NUC and COREN Accreditation Panels to many Universities.


Prof Salihi published many Journal Papers on Microcomputer Control Applications, Production Engineering and Management, and Mechanical Engineering in General, Internationally and Locally. He presented many papers in Conferences and Workshops.


Prof Salihi was a one-time Managing Director of the Kano State Transport Corporation, Director General and later Commissioner, Kano State Ministry of Works, Housing and Transport. He served on many Boards/ Committees/Panels at both State and Federal levels.

Prof Salihi was a recipient of many prestigious awards, including the NSE Merit Award.
