Welcome Address by the Academy President, Engr. (Mrs) J. O. Maduka, MFR during the Africa Catalyst Project Inaugural Workshop

Africa Catalyst Project is a project of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering in partnership with the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK titled "The Development of Nigerian Standards for Professional Engineering Competence - (Nigeria-SPEC)".

The main aim of the pilot project is to develop Nigeria-SPEC and specify the competencies required of different grades of engineering practioners in Nigeria to ensure that post-secondary education institutions are able to produce graduates with the engineering skills and knowledge base necessary for sustainable economic development of the country.

The purpose of the 2-day inaugural workshop was to launch the formative conversation that should eventually culminate in a Nigeria-SPEC that adequately captures the best interests of all the stakeholders of Nigerian engineering practice.

The workshop involved presentations from representatives of industries and academic institutions and engineering regulatory bodies in Nigeria. There were also perspectives from foreign counterparts in UK, US and China. The discussion sessions was interactive and intended for cross pollination of ideas on three key areas of engineering education and practice: Competencies, Curriculum and Learning Methods.

The President of the Academy, Engr. (Mrs.) J. O. Maduka, MFR in her welcome address assured the participants that the workshop will be worthwhile in order to reposition engineering in Nigeria.
