Membership

Fellows of the Academy are drawn from among very senior Nigerian and foreign engineering professionals who have distinguished themselves in business, academia and government. Fellows are drawn from the widest spread as regards engineering discipline, occupation and geographical location.

QUALIFICATIONS
 

To be eligible for the Fellowship of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering, a person must be a registered engineer, and shall have made substantial contributions or accomplishments in one or more of the following categories:-

(a) pioneering of new and developing field of technology, engineering knowledge or engineering sciences;

(b) significant contribution to art and practice of engineering;

(c) recognized by his/her professional peers for accomplishment in engineering and engineering related disciplines as well as professional integrity. Effectiveness and efficiency in leadership of organizations that have conducted pioneering or complex programmes or that have made noteworthy contributions to the field of engineering education shall be considered as supplementing the primary qualifications outlined above.

Persons, who, not being registered engineers, have in the opinion of Council made distinguished contributions to the practice of engineering shall be eligible for election as Honorary Fellow.
Engineers who are not Nigerian nationals, but are in the opinion of Council, of international distinction shall be eligible for election as Foreign Fellow.

GUIDELINES FOR ELECTION

1. Applications by individuals wishing to become Fellows are not permissible and not welcome.
2. New Fellows can be admitted only strictly by invitation of the Academy.

3. To qualify for election, a person must:

a)    have earned a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in engineering from a recognized tertiary institution.

b)    have professional registration of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) or a recognized foreign equivalent.

c)     have been elected a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineering, (FNSE) or other equivalent foreign engineering society.

d)    have had a distinguished career in one or more areas of engineering education, research, practice, management or policy development.

e)    have attained a level of responsibility in his/her career with clear and demonstrably high levels of responsibility and accountability.

f)     have earned the respect of his/her peers within and/or outside Nigeria.

g)    be judged to have such creative and professional abilities and drive that can enrich the Academy.

h)    be willing to actively participate in the activities of the Academy.

4. A prospective candidate must be nominated for consideration by a Proposer and two supporters all of whom must be bona fide Fellows of the Academy.

5. The Proposer and the Supporters must sign a declaration to the effect that they know the candidate, attest to the details of his/her background and vouch for his/her integrity.

6. The nomination must be made by completing the standard nomination form and accompanied by the Qualification Document duly completed in the format stipulated by the Academy.

7. Duly completed nomination documents must be submitted to Academy’s Administrative Secretary within the stipulated time.

ADMISSION OF NEW FELLOWS

PROCESS FOR EVALUATION OF CANDIDATES

 

PROPOSED NEW PROCESS WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING:

1.     Within 4 weeks after the induction of new Fellows but no later than 1stAugust of any year, the process of nominating new candidates must commence in accordance with the GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS for THE PROPOSAL OF A CANDIDATE FOR ELECTION OF FELLOW.

2.      Council shall determine the criteria for excellence by which candidates may be considered eligible for the Fellowship. To be regarded as being excellent as practicing engineers, it must be determined that significant outcomes have been crucially dependent on their personal engineering contributions. The criteria for excellence will vary from candidate to candidate but will contain one of the following essential five attributes:

1.1        Leaders in major organizations who have ultimate responsibility for the technical decisions taken and application of excellent engineering practice.

1.2        Engineers in academic and research institutes, industrial, commercial, government or military organizations whose new inventions, innovations, research or development efforts resulted in significant new products, processes, or practices.

1.3        Engineers who made outstanding technical contributions to major projects and new practices.

1.4        Leaders of engineering departments with evidence of major personal engineering achievements.

1.5        Influential contributions to major committees and agencies concerned with engineering policy or practice.

 3.  Council shall appoint, in addition to the existing Screening Committee, five sub-committees of three expert members, to screen and review the submission of the candidates for Fellowship.

3.1.       Each member of the Screening and sub-committees shall be knowledgeable in one of the five principal fields of engineering listed below:

3.1.1     Mechanical, aeronautical, marine, agricultural and Manufacturing Engineering.

3.1.2  Civil,structural,public works and building Engineering.

3.1.3     Electronics, electrical engineering, control, materials for electronics, in bioengineering, medical and healthcare.

3.1.4     Chemical, petroleum, fuel process, mining and materials Engineering.

3.1.5     Telecommunications network and systems computing and information.

All the engineering disciplines of the nominated candidates shall be identified and divided into five groups for the purpose of review by the sub-committees.

4.   The traditional call for nominations together with the new format nomination form, the candidate’s background document format, a citation for each candidate and other general information about the governing criteria for selection of new Fellows listed in paragraphs 2.1 through 2.5 above.

5.   All nomination documents should be required to be with the Academy Secretariat by 30th September.

6.   The Secretariat should screen and collate all documents into five groups of engineering disciplines for review and evaluation by the sub-committees and deliver same to the Chair, Screening Committee. He would check the packaging for completeness and immediately pass them to the respective Chairs of the five sub-committees and ensure commencement of work, no later than 15thOctober.

7.   The review sub- committees should deliver their recommendations to the Screening evaluation committee by 1st January.

8.   The Screening committee should deliver their recommendations to the President at the meeting of the Executive Council by the middle of January.

9.   Based on recommendations of the sub-committees and taking into account other criteria for age, discipline and industry spread etc., the Screening evaluation committee should prepare a shortlist of candidates

10. The Executive Committee should review the shortlist in time to forward same to all Fellows by 21st FEBRUARY for the traditional voting with a return deadline of 21st March.

11. This leaves enough time to finalize the election results and inform the new Fellows in good time before AGM and the induction ceremony.
